The Florida legislature passed a comprehensive disaster and emergency preparedness act during the 1993 legislative session. The intent of the act was to provide a more formalized approach to emergency and disaster response, as a result of the situation in Florida following Hurricane Andrew. As a result, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, and hospitals are required to develop emergency management plans that comply with state approved criteria. The plans must be established to ensure the safety of patients, particularly with regards to evacuation transportation, emergency supplies, and staffing during emergencies. Plans must be submitted to your local emergency management office for review and approval.
